Koch Architects is a full-service architecture and design firm based in Berkeley, California. Founded by principal Joanne Koch in 1998, the firm works closely with clients across a range of project types, from smaller interventions to full-scale, newly constructed homes. Weaving together the multifaceted aspects of a building project: site planning, design, financing, contractors and public agencies, Koch Architects is dedicated to integrating intuition with experience, precedent with innovation, creative vision with practical constraints. We see the design process as an intimate, personal collaboration with our clients, and our role as guides, facilitators, and co-creators.

joanne koch, AIa, principal.  

Founder and principal Joanne Koch is an intuitive, experienced and knowledgeable guide through the process of architecture and design. Before establishing her own firm, she worked with both large and small firms in San Francisco and Sonoma County, honing her architectural skills on projects ranging from warehouse conversions, row houses, and retail stores to wineries and rural residences. 

 Joanne was introduced to architecture through her grandparents; it was during summers spent visiting their architect-designed modern home on California’s central coast that she gained an early appreciation for how spatial and material compositions can work together to refine and elevate the quality of living. In architecture school, she was inspired by California’s midcentury modernist tradition and has continued to emphasize the style’s relationship between seamless indoor-outdoor living and the skillful adoption of wood, concrete, glass, and steel to create spaces that are warm, well-crafted, and restorative.

 As principal, Joanne infuses every project with her signature blend of interpersonal skills, creative vision, design guidance, and architectural expertise. Working closely with clients, staff, and a wide-ranging network of consultants, Joanne ensures that each project receives care, attention, and focus.
